Pasadena Dentist Slaying Investigation Yields No Clues

Pasadena authorities reported no tangible clues emerged after today’s probe into the slaying of Dr. Leonard Biewer, a Pasadena dentist, with the mystery unresolved as investigators continue effort to uncover suspects and motive.

Parole granted to 39 prisoners by Governor Ritchie

Governor Ritchie announced 39 Christmas paroles including Irvin Wilson of Williamsport serving two and a half years for larceny and Carm el Hawbaker for egg theft. Also released were two life termers tied to murder cases from age seventeen, Harry C. Noland and Mrs Grace C. Cothron, after long sentences and study of past conduct.

Charges Dropped Against Negroes in Maryland

Belair, Md. December 1 State's Attorney Meyer H Getz said two Black men George Highman of Black Horse and Roas Jones of Fallston were jailed after 16 year old Marie Ball fabricated a kidnapping tale fearing punishment for staying out late. He dropped charges but kept them for 24 hours to publicize their innocence. Ball is sister to the Ball brothers, noted steeplechase jockeys from Taylor, Md.

Tax methods outlined for federal revenue overhaul

Washington December 19 proposals to raise income tax rates abolish all federal excise and processing levies were submitted to the House ways and means committee. A majority favored eliminating consolidated income returns for corporations. Dr Colston Warne urged income based revenue with taxes on government bonds and higher inheritance levies. The committee plans to finish hearings on the general revenue bill Thursday and draft a liquor tax bill in executive session Friday. Witnesses urged wealth redistribution through heavier income taxes on the rich.

Manufacturers oppose tax plan in trade group clash

The Association of Manufacturers and the New York Board of Trade faced stiff opposition in committee when they objected to abolishing consolidated returns. James A Emery of Washington, general counsel for the Manufacturers' Association, urged adoption of a general sales tax excluding food, clothing and medicine, citing income tax volatility as a revenue source.
