A veteran report recalls intense fighting around Kes j fernich with infantry supported by artillery and anti aircraft fire. German forces counterattacked as a heavy barrage broke, paratroopers were dropped close to our lines, communications failed, and all personnel including cooks and engineers manned weapons to halt the enemy advance.
Fragmentary account recalls heavy shelling and bombardment in small towns with gas trucks burning and mortars disabling lines. It notes U S Army service of George G Meare who served four years and one month and is now unmarried and at home after discharge on October 29, 1945.
The text describes a man named McCurdy offering a woman 4 cents to pay for broken glass after an incident at a house. The woman to Magistrate Bostetter that he could do whatever he pleased, referencing prior confinement and a possible parole term. McCurdy admits fault and promises better conduct. he has worked as a broker glass collector and seller for remelt.
In Waynesburg on December 17, 15 year old Donald Mulleneaux pleaded guilty to first degree murder for the thrill slaying of 63 year old Kathryn Fletcher. Judge J I Hook sentenced him to life imprisonment after the knife attack described as a thrill seeking act. Mulleneaux sobbed as he was led from the court.
At the banquet in the Lord Baltimore Hotel the county delegation unanimously elected Mr. Ankeney as chairman. The three officers bring wide Annapolis legislative experience. The six member delegation, evenly split six Democrats and six Republicans, agreed to set aside party lines to aid Washington County and Maryland and back Governor William Preston Lane Jr. for four years.
Snowbound in a mountain lodge, Mrs Bonnie Trent, a 19 year old Oklahoma City writer's wife, gave birth to a stillborn child after her husband assisted by a physician by telephone. Ranchers reached the stranded lodge and moved her to a ranch and then to a hospital in Boulder County.
The American Legion Moris Frock Post reported the gifts for Yanks drive is behind schedule as it seeks gifts or money for service members in Army Navy or Marine hospitals. The deadline is Friday Dec 20 with the post urging public cooperation and listing 2771 as contact.
Washington reports the American Legion will organize a third mass pilgrimage to France in 1947 led by Phil Collins of Chicago. National Commander Paul H. Griffith announced the invitation from French President George Bidault for a sentimental journey to the Legion birthplace Paris. In prior trips, more than 25 000 members and families attended in 1927 and about 5 000 in 1937.
The Washington County Historical Society plans its annual membership meeting on Thursday January 30 at Hotel Alexander with Joseph W Byron as the principal speaker. Directors reported progress on church record copying in Hagerstown and Washington County and outlined district divisions to collect records through 1900.
A resolutions committee was formed to note the death of Mrs. C. Courtney Seaman, a director of the Washington County Historical Society. The panel includes Mrs. Frank Schwartz, Rev. Scott R. Wagner, and Dr. W. H. Shealy.
Eleven candidates will take their first degrees at the De Molay chapter meeting in the Masonic Temple Hagerstown. Officers will be selected and a general session will review the recent dance discuss the January 7 installation with Judge Harvey Miller as speaker and plan a later banquet. Names listed include Robert Sowers Clinton Neff Ronald Britner Fred Cole William Foreman Ernest Hart Richard Hoffman William Horst Fred Jones Hubert Poole and James Snyder.
