City police captured a hungry tired parakeet on Hagerstown street and took it to Magistrate Paul Ottinger’s office. The bird shares a cage with “George,” the magistrate’s parakeet, and may be claimed by its owner upon identification.
In Port Said Egypt guerrillas struck U N police patrols and British troops tightened security as the hunt for a kidnapped lieutenant intensified. U N officials reported no casualties among patrols despite grenade and small arms fire. Colonel Burns protested to Cairo authorities while withdrawal of British and French forces loomed near. President Eisenhower named Lewis W Douglas honorary chairman of the President s Committee for Hungarian Refugee Relief.
A new Washington County topographic map by the Maryland Department of Geology Mines and Water Resources has just been released. It updates roads boundaries and includes a State Coordinate Grid and election district demarcations. The 30x50 inch map costs one dollar plus tax and is available from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.
Official entry blank for the Christmas Lighting Contest appears elsewhere in this issue. Sponsored by the Junior Chamber, the contest is open to all. Entries must be mailed on or before next Saturday December 2. The winner will be entered in the national contest and judged for best display.
Mrs Richard House of Mulberry Street ordered a six foot artificial Christmas tree from a catalog. The parcel arrived pocked with needles and loose pieces, yet she notes it would end the yearly pine needles hunt and may pay for itself over time.
Franklin Leo Henson, 29, 622 Chestnut Street, was fined 225 dollars after convictions for unreasonable speed reckless driving and driving under the influence. He struck Helen L. Shipley of Big Pool after skidding 90 feet on East Washington Street. Deputy officers Frush Lowry and Cross reported the high speed turn from North Potomac Street into the Square. Paul E. Jenkins, 21, 345 Central Avenue, was fined 150 dollars and jailed three days for drunken driving after a crash on the Williamsport Green Castle Pike.
Four men died and two passengers were injured when a car sped through the front brick wall of a Toledo tavern early today. The deceased were William Wittes 23 Forest Lee 26 Richard J Nailor 25 and Richard Dean Jacobs 21. Injured were Albert R Martin 21 and Richard B Hilfinger 22. Two waitresses Eunice Cross 30 and Dottie Bost 40 were not seriously hurt. All six men had been visiting another bar and hurried to reach this tavern before closing time.
Sheriff Edward L. Rowland backs a merit system for most sheriff office employees to protect jobs across sheriff changes. He agrees with State Senator Charles Downey that deputies and others should be covered, noting the increased difficulty of modern law enforcement.
A burglary at the Acme store on 1931 Virginia Avenue saw a two by three foot safe drilled open and a vault of $800 to $900 stolen. Entry came through a drilled roof hole via a ladder. State troopers said the model is hard to open and a gang active in other Acme markets may be involved.
Eva Della Casa, 20, nervously bites her nails as she waits at Camp Kilmer New Jersey with 100 other California bound Hungarian refugees. Her husband, Italian, is in Yugoslavia. Eva and sister Erzabet have jobs waiting in Atherton California.
Retail sales lag behind booming factory and energy output this week as Dun & Bradstreet cites a drop from last year. Department store sales down 4 percent nationally, 8 percent in New York District, with toys jewelry and apparel hardest hit. Manufacturer activity remains high with steel, power, and auto production reaching historic or near records, while GM Fisher body strikes and Chevrolet cuts affect output.
The real estate market moved at a slower pace this week with sales and total value both substantially down. Transactions included Roger D. Shelleman and wife selling the Mumma home on Terrace and then buying and selling property on Summit Avenue among others.
Sgt Grason Doornberger reports 67 automobile accidents in Hagerstown during November with 16 injuries up from last year. Pedestrians accounted for four of the injured while 63 drivers violated driving laws. Through eleven months there were 677 accidents with one death and 195 injuries, and 196 arrests, 69 for speeding.
The first fourteen days of December show Haegerstown Post Office receipts at 42,495, about 3,134 less than the 5,828 recorded for the same period last year. Letter and parcel volumes are similar to last year, with officials hoping patrons mail more cards and parcels to boost business.
ST. LOUIS Robert E Peters went rabbit hunting the day after his wedding 21 months ago. The laborer said when he got home his bride Adria 20 was gone and he hasn t seen her since. Circuit Judge Raymond E Ladner granted Peters a divorce yesterday.
William F. Garnish aged 23 of 143 North Conococheague Street Williamsport was held on a federal transport of a stolen auto across state line charge. FBI arrested him last night and he remains jailed in default of bond pending U S Marshal arrival.
Flash floods across sections of West Virginia drowned a 57 year old coal company employee Gordon Ashcraft whose body was recovered below a bridge. Schools in three counties and parts of two others were closed as cleanup began with rain subsiding and rivers receding though more showers were possible.
A pre winter storm snarled transportation and communications across the Northeast with at least 10 deaths. New York led in storm fatalities with seven traffic deaths as snow and rain disrupted travel from Albany to Schenectady. New Jersey faced freezing rain with power and line outages in Sussex County. Massachusetts towns reported several inches of snow while Boston saw about an inch.
A teacher and five students from the county were injured when a car left the road and hit a fence near Frederick around 12:30 a.m. They were treated at Frederick Memorial Hospital and released. The driver, Miss Dorothy J. Quade, 24, a music teacher, fell asleep and failed to stay in the center of the highway. The group was returning from a trip to Washington. A hearing is set for next Saturday.
