Eastern sections faced a brutal cold wave with heavy snow and subfreezing temperatures. The weather crisis has caused 26 deaths so far, with new fatalities attributed as the cold persisted across the eastern states. Florida and Gulf states felt the chill but saw some relief as the front weakened in the central regions.
A powerful cold wave swept across Florida and northern regions, driving temperatures into the 20s and 30s and wrecking crops especially strawberries in Florida. The cold also spawned heavy snow from the Great Lakes to the Northeast, with towns like South Bend Paw Paw and Hartford reporting sizable accumulations and a heart attack death tied to shoveling snow.
A wintry blast grips Virginia with readings around two degrees at Pulaski and 12 in Richmond. Snow blankets much of the state as roads turn hazardous despite maintenance efforts. Norfolk posts 16 degrees, other coastal areas down into the high teens with mountains cooler. A warming trend is forecast for the coming days, though some areas may stay frigid.
Last night the coldest of the season with official readings near zero in Boonsboro and Maryland wide. Oakland hit the day’s coldest at exact zero, Cumberland and Frostburg at 9, Hagerstown 9, Keedysville and Hancock 41 above, with snow still affecting Garrett County roads. Forecasters expect further cold and possible late snow. Baltimore and counties canceled classes as a precaution.

Patients in Washing ton County Hospital solariums report a continuous light below them described as a sternal light. A visitor learned the glow originates from a street torch atop a manhole on a new East Antictam Street section beyond the L Aiglon plant. The street is gravel covered and will be paved next spring, leaving the marked hazard illuminated to warn pedestrians and drivers.
Mayor Winslow F. Burhans arrived in Hagerstown after a 23 day San Francisco trip for the American Municipal Conference with about 1,500 mayors attending. He plans a budget review for 1953 and says several special meetings are needed to set the next year’s tax rate. He also noted weather delays in his return and potential continued work after tonight’s council session.
R A Darby Lumber Company owner reports several deer shot with a .22 rifle on Indian Springs property. He witnessed a deer dying from stomach wounds while bystanders watched. He says night trespassers with headlight rifles are common and urges witnesses to come forward.
The main Hagerstown Post Office and the Northern Avenue branch will open 7 to 6 tonight to mail Christmas parcels and sell stamps. Tonight’s hours are the last evening this year with 7 to 6 hours through December 20. Postmaster Thomas M. Simpson reported postal receipts $45,000 behind last year and overall activity unusually slow for the season. He urged patrons to use the late hours to avoid delays.
The Indonesian army announced all personnel are confined to barracks with leave soldiers ordered to report to posts. Spokesman Maj. Neighbors opened homes. the family lost all possessions including meat from two slaughtered hogs. Immediate aid requested for clothing, furnishings, and basic needs.
Rev J Earhart of Broadfording Church of the Brethren appeals for clothing beds and household items for the Arnsparger family displaced by a fire. Children ages 15 months to six years and three adults need immediate help with beds and clothing, plus food staples. Donations can be phoned to Clarence Hull or brought to Mrs Beta Wolford’s home where the family is staying.
The first report of findings from a $255,000 two year study on medical care for disabled and low income groups was presented this afternoon. Dr. G H Hatcher chaired the session at Coffman Health Center with officials from New York State local health welfare rehab and federal departments in attendance.
In Chicago a babysitter Finis Kittinger and a two year old boy Roger Van Horne died after eating chicken dinner poisoned with cockroach powder wrongly used as flour. The two sisters Deborah and Buen were critically ill in hospital. the mother returned home as the meal was served. Police said the poison caused rapid collapse. the father did not live with the family.
Carroll County medical examiner reports 28 year old Francis Cherry drove through a lawn and into a Hampstead home striking resident Carroll Myers dead at the scene. The car also damaged the house and caught fire before responders arrived. Cherry was injured and treated at Hanover General Hospital.
New York officials reported improving subway service as a motormen strike entered its fourth day. The union called the transit authority claim of returning workers a lie, while officials warned of penalties for civil service strikers. Board chairman Patterson rejected talks with the strikers, stating he would not bargain with lawbreakers despite a back-to-work trend noted by the authority.
Rose Marie Line of near Keedysville plans to celebrate her thirteenth birthday on a Friday the 13th considered unlucky. She and her parents Mr and Mrs George W Line reside on Keedyaville Route 1 and embrace the date with no superstition.
