J G Jack Hellane councilman Ward 1 filed his certificate of candidacy for re election as the first Republican to announce in the city. He stressed duties include setting tax policy and planning for postwar improvements as the city grows and troops return home.
North American Aviation of Inglewood California will assist in mass producing the Fairchild C 82 cargo plane in partnership with Fairchild. The project aims to supply the Army with a rapid transport capable of carrying tanks artillery and troops across 3500 miles. The C 82 features a square rear opening, twin tail booms, and a level cargo floor designed for efficient loading and unloading.
Allied reports describe advances along the Rhine and Mosel fronts as German lines weaken. In Alsace German detachments withdraw toward Breisach while French and American forces push near Colmar and Haguenau. In England 8th Air Force bomber station, Garnner D. Hagwood, son of Mrs Ruth Hagewood of 144 East Washington, has been promoted to master sergeant. He serves as a crew chief of a B 17 in the 457th Bombardment Group, part of the Sth Air Force, after long Atlantic and Pacific service. A Hagerstown High graduate, he joined the Army Air Corps July 12, 1937.
