Delays Push Washington County Officials Back A Week
New Washington county officials will start their terms next week due to a technicality. State Secretary Thomas Elmo Jones said commissions will reach new officials after the State Board of Canvassers certifies election returns, delayed by late final returns and armed services ballot timing. The board meets Thursday, within the 36 day canvass window. sheriffs and county commissioners will hold over, most others assume January first. An unrelated note recalls 40,000 Loyalists migrating to Canada during the American Revolution.
