Mrs Ruth Hartzell of Gettysburg Pa now wears a ring that vanished two years ago when her mother pulled a carrot from the garden The gold band was later found around the tip of that carrot revealing the missing keepsake and a family tale.
Congress may tighten federal rules after a Senate committee report on campaign spending. The panel disclosed $144,430 from three DuPont family members and $6,500 from Mrs. Joseph E Davies to Democratic funds, with at least $50,000 from J P Morgan to Republican groups. The Melon family members also contributed $50,000. The committee will seek details from all contributors of $500 or more to aid legislative recommendations. Total expenditures exceeded $13 million in the last campaign.
A Census Bureau report released by the Hagerstown Chamber of Commerce shows 1935 retail sales in Hagerstown totaling 13.6 million, up from 9.9 million in 1933, with payrolls rising to 1.509 million from 1.272 million and 1,941 total employees across 546 stores. Automobile group led sales at 2.868 million, followed by food stores at 2.521 million and apparel at 2.10 million.
An early morning crash on the Defense highway near Bladensburg Maryland killed 22 year old Cooper Heard of Washington and critically injured two others, Benjamin Hull of Doe Hill Virginia and Charlotte Paugh of Washington. E M Lacy a driver for Fairfax dairy found the injured.
Mrs. W Henry Florence removed her left glove on a downtown Niagara Falls street corner yesterday. She returned home two miles away shortly after and discovered her diamond ring missing. She removed overshoes and found the ring embedded in the rubber heel.
Henry Butler, a Black steel worker, was charged with assault with intent to murder in Birmingham. He claimed he mistook Percy Nixon, a Black WPA worker, for a brown possum and fired. The judge accepted the plea and Butler was freed after Nixon survived.
A Canadian born cold wave advanced across the Great Lakes and into the East. New York reported 12 degrees above zero at 5 30 am with a high of 30 degrees forecast. Lowell Mass saw its coldest December 1 in 47 years. Canal traffic in the eastern inland waterway was impeded by sludge ice as barges risked wintering in the ice on the Erie Canal near Albany.
Tallahassee, Fla. December 1. The governor's office disclosed an investigation into charges that negroes are kept in virtual slavery in Florida turpentine camps. The executive secretary said they expect to get to the bottom of this. Governor Shultz telegraphed the AF L president that peonage will not be countenanced in the state and would act immediately if found. A labor investigating committee told the Tampa convention that poorly paid negroes may suffer beatings and threats if they attempt to leave.
A Maryland State Grange report urged strict government economy and a light real estate tax burden. Written for the sixty fourth annual convention, the plan favors limiting bonds, reinstituting relief taxes, dedicating highway revenue, returning gasoline tax funds to counties, county reassessment in 1937, and a state income tax to ease real estate taxes.
Norman Brenneman of Grove City Pennsylvania decided to trap a thief haunting his hen house. He hid nearby heard a noise and pounced but the culprit turned out to be a polecat.
Social Security applications checked here show surprisingly few mistakes with less than ten percent of forms error prone. Postmaster J T Hartle says errors are corrected or returned for fixes. Most errors arise in question ten asking for mother’s full maiden name. Hartle urges employees to complete forms correctly before Saturday deadline and offers evening help at the post office. A 15 person team works on second floor checking and tabulating submissions.
A jury is to be selected in Gastoria for Raymond Edwards, 23, accused of killing his wife with an axe during a domestic quarrel. Solicitor plans to seek first degree murder. Sheriff cites a confession in which Edwards says his wife struck him with a coal shovel before he used the axe.
Spokane, December 1. The city legal system prepared to administer castor oil to three prisoners in the city jail as an alternative to jail time. Judge Frank Yuse ordered 10 days or an overdose of castor oil for those cited twice in a month, with the oil given in a physician’s presence. Dr. Ralph Hendricks refused to partner with the plan citing potential liability. assistant counsel L W Congrard secured waivers to back legal safety of the scheme.
About 700 deer hunters in tent colonies between Kane and Marienville fled to hotels as western Pennsylvania plunged to 19 below at 6 am in a broad cold wave. Snow covered the ground, rifles froze if not greased, and readings stretched from Kane to Ridgway and St Marys with Pittsburgh at 16 above zero.

In Silerton Oregon on December 1 Albert Dicito drove without a license and hit an automobile containing a child. A constable deputy sheriff assistant district attorney and a coroner responded as needed, with the coroner not required. Dicito paid seven dollars and fifty cents costs plus a repair bill.
