President Hoover pushes drastic budget cuts and a flat ten percent pay cut for federal employees. Plans include a general manufacturers tax and a sales tax to balance the federal budget, with discussions ongoing with Secretary Mills and Congress.
In Marshall Minnesota on December 1 a man paid for Christmas shopping with a frayed five dollar Confederate note dated February 1864. The note bore portraits of Jefferson Davis and the Confederate Capitol in Richmond and was accepted by Bert Schuck, a local storekeeper, for its full face value because it appears to be genuine.
E. W. Scott of Washington, D C was granted an amateur radio license for a new station to be located in Hagerstown. The Federal Radio Commission announced the grant today noting the call letters will be W3CFX.
Washington December 1 figures placed 2000 demonstrators en route to the capital, about 500 more than last year’s hunger march but far fewer than the 1920s bonus army eviction. City and Federal authorities will deploy heavy guards at the White House and Capitol, with a metropolitan police contingent and park guards aiding Secret Service and police near key sites.
Five hundred marchers en route to Washington seek federal aid head toward Pittsburgh after overnighting in Youngstown sympathizers quarters. Another group of about 100 marchers moved east from Steubenville.
Earl Browder, on behalf of William Foster, said the national committee backed a planned march on Oct. 10 and that Foster proposed it in a Sept. 12 speech. Browder stressed the party’s support while noting most marchers are not Communists but may grow sympathetic during the event.
A historical call to support a Welfare Federation campaign in Washington County and Hagerstown. The appeal urges every resident to donate the full $44,000 for the winter campaign, stressing urgency and collective duty. It names funders Rockefeller and Russell Sage Foundations as endorsing organized charity and urges immediate, small, or large contributions from all citizens.
The Democratic Club will hold its regular monthly session tomorrow evening to discuss future winter activities. Teachers have important messages for members and a full turnout is anticipated. The meeting will be called at the usual hour.

A barn on the William Geeling farm near Sharpsburg was destroyed by fire, with most of its contents including wheat, corn, hay and implements lost. The residence was briefly threatened until Boonsboro firemen confined the blaze. a tramp suspected of sleeping in the haymow overnight may have started the fire by a lit cigarette.
CHICAGO December 1 The grand champion steer of the International Livestock show Texas Special went to the slaughter block at a price of 1.054 per pound. The purchaser was John P Bowles of the Minors Packing Company of Chicago. The price was five cents a pound higher than last year's grand champion.
CINAVAGO December 1 A bootlegger pressured Elmer McDonald to pay his bill by Saturday or face consequences. Fearing harm, he fled to a police station and confessed to a Des Moines, Ta robbery spree. Police doubt the threat, believing the bootlegger meant a delay for payment.
The Welfare Federation campaign aims to raise 44000 to meet winter needs. About 12000 has been pledged so far with officials announcing ongoing efforts. John R. Tenny said budgets for five agencies were tightened and the drive must continue until the target is met. Continued on Page 7.

Alexandria dispatch reports Greensboro Police Chief N C Caffey says he plans to retrieve prisoners from home. Vernon White, a Black man, was arrested locally and Caffey wired back that White wanted release but would be fetched when he returns home.
Four masked gunmen robbed the Southampton State Bank in Bucks County, forcing customers to lie on the floor and fleeing in an automobile with about $2,060 in small coins. Fewer than a dozen people knew what occurred as the suspects vanished from the town.
A ten day cold wave in Central Mexico has claimed seven lives in the Mexico City area with three deaths in Pachuca, one in Puebla, and three in the State of Mexico. The temperature dropped to 26 degrees above zero last night, signaling worsening winter conditions. In Geneva New York a separate accident killed 75 year old Dr John Pope Delaney after being struck by two cars.
