In a dim room Ruth Sorensen observes John Ames muttering about his wife Lila Ames as she recalls their strained marriage. After a late dinner in the empty house Sorensen notes the contrast between a poised stage life and a hollow home. The scene ends with a notion that Lila longs for other men while the Ames marriage remains emotionally distant.
Junior Connor aged 3 was the center of a city wide police search after vanishing from near 608 Washington St. Saturday night. A fire alarm drew attention but officers investigated leads as neighbors worried about a kidnapping or sewer exploration. Officer Trumpower located the boy after more than five hours missing.
Mexican vocal students conducted by Karl Brenerman presented a two hour recital at the home of Mark H Landis in Blue Ridge Summit. Seven members performed including four men and three women in a Friday evening concert for vocal music lovers.
Mrs Victor Miller of Hagerstown and Miss Lina Newcomer of St Louis with Rev Luther Miller of Baltimore visited Mrs Sarah Ash and Miss Martha Spickler. Ellen Helser spent days with Frank Weller at Millstone Point. Geo Bloyer of Clear Spring visited Richard Bloyer. Frank Spickler and wife hosted guests including Mellie Miller Clearspring and Maggie Fasnacht Shady Bore. Roy Ebersole's Charleston family visited Christian Ebersole. Thomas Shank spent weekend with Jessie Brewer near Hagerstown. A pound party will be at Frank Bussard's home Wednesday. St Pauls Lutheran Aid will hold its annual picnic along Potomac at Chas Shupps Mill Thursday. Mrs Emma Spickler and Nellie Clearspring and Miss Mary Anderson Pittsburgh visited Sarah Ash and Martha Spickler. Thelma Hankey Wilsons spent day with Mary Helser. Austin Herbert visited Jessie Herbert and family in Martinsburg. Mary Helser visited Mary Needy in Charlton. Rev Wm Diehl Clearspring to hold St Pauls Church service Sunday at 2 30 PM.
The Fifth Annual Farmers' Picnic at Doub's Woods drew over 10000 people from Maryland Pennsylvania Virginia and West Virginia. John N Mackall chairman of the State Roads Commission urged more farm to market roads opposing interstate road systems and explained Maryland's road network. Lloyd S Tenney of the Bureau of Markets stressed farmers cooperation in advertising and selling products. Thomas B Symons of the University of Maryland praised American farmers after touring Europe. Not present were Senator Capper, Asbury Lever, and Gray Silver who sent regrets. The Chamber of Commerce beat Farmers' Association in a county baseball game 18 to 1. The day featured 500 exhibits, music, a milk saloon, and numerous committees overseeing events.
The municipal band season closed last night in City Park after what witnesses call the largest crowd of the season. Rev. J. W. Gardner of the Baptist Church led religious services and Miss Edna Weller accompanied the Shermans' duet. plans for a winter concert series were hinted.
Miss Mary Katherine Martin daughter of Harvey J. Martin near Wilsons and Rev Roland Reichard of Feirplay were quietly married Saturday at 8 in the Church of the Brethren Man t gansville by Rev John Roland. They depart for a wedding trip and will reside at Arch Spring Farm near Fair A lawn party by Mia Julia Boswel in Clearspring on Sept 2 from 6 30 to 9 30 for former pupils and current students of her school. Mrs William J Friedell and Billy return from a three month Southern Virginia visit accompanied by Mr W H Friedell who will stay awhile.
Workers at Bethlehem Shipbuilding Corporation Sparrows Point divide shifts to spread employment. Men in several departments work one week then lay off the next to allow more colleagues to earn income for their families. Foremen and workers arranged it. officials have not sanctioned but have no objections.
Mrs Elizabeth J Fogle of Frederick Maryland reports relief from chronic rheumatism after using six bottles of Dreen. She says the first bottle helped and urges others to try the remedy sold by Aughinbaugh and Knessley in Hagerstown and by all druggists. A classified ad asks if readers want to rent a room.
