Slain Woman Is Identified in New York Barrel Find
The body of the young woman found stuffed in a barrel along the East River near New York was identified as Mrs. Essie Gordon, widow of Max Gordon known as One-Eyed Maxie Gordon. In Cumberland Maryland on August 28 Nick Scarpelli a grocer saw a four foot long snake embedded in a banana stalk. He attempted to cut the stem but paused as the snake hissed with fangs exposed. He freed the reptile and speculated it arrived with the bananas from South America.
