The 15th annual American Legion Maryland Department convention ended with officers elected Baltimore chosen as 1924 convention site and a resolution endorsing Gen Mil ron A Reckord for National Commander. Delegates departed Saturday as district heads and executive committees were named and officers confirmed.
Delegates were elected to the national convention in Chicago. Resolutions urged civil service enforcement and proper definition of civil service law. Takoma Park Post named official flag post of the Legion. Another motion urged government to furnish firing squads at funerals for honorably discharged veterans, a practice previously discontinued under the National Economy Act.
The resignation of College professor Felix Morley from Roosevelt era advisory circles ends a two year core link between the President and his top policy group. Morley, long at the White House desk, had shifted recently to rackets inquiry amid tensions with Hull.
Langhorne Pa August 27 Representative Henry W Watson veteran member of Congress from the Ninth District of Pennsylvania died at his home today after several weeks illness of heart disease He was 76 years old.
The temperature rose to 91 at Chenaville on Sunday, with Saturday's maximum also 91. The lowest reading yesterday was 62, and at sundown the temperature stood at 62, reported by D Paul Oswald in charge at the Chenaville weather station.
John Martz and wife spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Swope and Harmony. Mrs. L. H. Stouffer and Mrs. John Shafer visited Harvey Martz and Miss Missouri in Boonsboro. Mrs. Minnie Wagner of Hagerstown visits Beaver Creek with John Dubel. Mrs. Ethel Coseboom and daughter Dorothy of Hagerstown pass through to Washington for weeks with Mr. Coseboom. P A Cost of Hagerstown, once ill, shows slight improvement. Miss Cora Foltz, five weeks at Washington County Hospital, expected home this week. Emma and Ide Watkins of Hagerstown visited Mrs. C. H. Minnebraker last Friday. Mrs. Minnebraker visited Tuesday with Miss Virgie Fahrney. Minnebraker and Miss Fahrney hosted Beaver Creek Homemakers Club. Ardath Martin, Home Demonstrator, gave an interesting demonstration.
Lee Bryant aged 40 was killed when he fell from the rear of a truck while returning from Elm Grove West Virginia with groceries. Driver Elzie Doman stated Bryant apparently dozed and slid off the vehicle as it jolted. The incident occurred in New Alexandria Pennsylvania on August 27.
Mrs. Claggett Ramsburg of Frederick was elected Western Maryland District Director of the Maryland Department of the American Legion Auxiliary at the department's twelfth annual convention. Other district directors and national delegates were named, with alternates listed for each post.
Port Deposit Md August 27 Dr Joseph I France and O G Christgau of Washington staged a clash over the prohibition issue in a public discussion at Mount Ararat Farm. Christgau, assistant to the Anti Saloon League general superintendent, argued for the Eighteenth Amendment while Dr France, a former United States proctors, urged citizen rights over liquor legalization. The talk contrasted legal and constitutional viewpoints amid national temper.
