Mississippi Governer Race Near Close After Turbulent Polls
In Mississippi a tight race between Lt. Gov. Paul Johnson and former Gov. J.P. Coleman dominates the day. Conflicting claims and reports of possible Negro votes color the finish as Kennedy civil rights policy and University of Mississippi desegregation loom in the background. The winner will face Rubel Phillips and Ed Bishop in November to succeed Gov. Hoss Barnett. Balloting continues, with rapid vote counting underway in most precincts except Adams County which uses machines.
