Hartford, August 26. The Rev. Kurt E. B. Motzahn, a Philadelphia clergyman and former German cavalry officer, was convicted of peace time espionage and sentenced to 10 years in federal prison. He was accused of aiding a plot to relay military information to Germany and Japan after a jury conviction last Friday. The government sought 20 years, while the defense urged a one year term as adequate.
The Board of Street Commissioners urged the Mayor and Council to fund a $15 monthly raise for Hagerstown Police Department patrolmen, with a proposal to seek a state law change to raise the police chief’s pay from the current $200 a month. A vacancy for a desk clerk will remain until acted on, while radio operator licensed clerks are required. The Treasury urged the Senate Finance Committee to boost corporate taxes beyond House levels while offering postwar rebates and a new nest egg reserve. Randolph Paul proposed raising the combined normal and surtaxes to 55 percent, keeping the excess profits tax, and allowing firms to retain 12 percent of taxes for investment in government bonds or prewar debt repayment. A separate 15 percent nest egg fund would be set up for inventory losses and deferred repairs, with Taft estimating about 2.6 billion dollars yearly funding this reserve.
A 61 year old Hungarian was picked up for investigation by city police last night and is being held for questioning by an agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Police said the man visited in Hagerstown several years ago and registered at the Red Shield Lodge under a name different from that, which he gave last night. He said he made application for first citizenship papers some years ago but never took out second papers.
A Leitersburg farm and seven parcels from the Garmong estate were sold at public auction before the Court House. Auctioneer J. C. Snyder presided. The 66 acre Myers farm near Leitersburg sold to W. W. Smith for 4100 dollars. an orchard was withdrawn. Garmong properties sold to several buyers with prices including 2200, 1000, 815, 2825, 2400, 1200, and 25 dollars to listed purchasers.
Western Enterprise and Antietam Fire Companies responded yesterday afternoon around 3 o clock to a false alarm from a box at the Buena Vista and West Washington street corner. The incident involved no fire or injuries and caused only routine inspections by responders.
British planes struck an axis transport in the Mediterranean and attacked a land convoy moving reinforcements toward the front in North Africa. The RAF communique reported the action on August 26 from Cairo.
