Pope Pius on Vatican Radio urged world leaders to resolve disputes through talks rather than war. He warned against conquests not founded on justice, stressed peace and justice, and urged governments and peoples to set aside armed threats and seek understanding to avert a bloodier conflict.
Trinidad Aug 25 Julius Franklin Howell of Bristol Virginia, a 94 year old insurance man, was elected unanimously as Commander in Chief of the 3,000 surviving Confederate veterans. He succeeds General John W Harris of Oklahoma City. Thomas E Powe of St Louis lumber dealer was named National Commander of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, succeeding J Roy Price of Shreveport. Howell began a new insurance career at 60 after retiring as president of the Virginia Intermont College.
Haim Flakman, described as a man without a country, was ordered deported once more from Miami. Immigration officials arranged for him to board the steamship Florida bound for Havana in the hope he may finally be allowed to land there and join his family.
Maryland American Legion members prepared to cast aside the serious aspects of their annual convention and enjoy a parade, drum and bugle corps, and color guard competition. The four day meeting will close tomorrow with officer elections led by W. Ray Tabler and James Fitzgerald, as veterans recall past wars amid talk of taming current conflicts.
