Government officials say that the number and size of wage raises in coming months are difficult to predict. Employers may grant raises without government action if the raise does not affect price ceilings or government costs. otherwise the case goes to the War Labor Board or the Treasury’s salary stabilization unit for ruling.
The agency notes only five cases involving price increase requests in the unit’s wartime existence, so the salary stabilization unit will have little more work to do.
The bill, backed by Wagner and Murray, aims to create a national production and employment budget to map labor force, spending, and investment. It envisions public works projects self liquidating or wealth-adding, funded by private contractors if needed, and a federal investment program to boost jobs for all seeking work.
Industry relief discussions follow wage and price controls as Senate committees hold brief hearings on a full employment bill. Congress returns from vacation late September or October due to lack of reconversion legislation. In Logan West Virginia a mother of 18 children was slain and her 17 year old son wounded in a dispute with neighbor Everitt Whitt over wood salvaged from a creek bed. Whitt 54 is jailed on murder charges after a shotgun clash that left Mrs Ben Elkins dead and her son Ben Jr wounded. Deputy Gore found two empty shells at the scene.
Frizzett announced that PBM operations at Fairchild Nos. 2 and 5 will close today at 4 30 p m and reopen Thursday August 23 at 4 30 p m. All hourly PBM workers and related staff will be off during the two day shutdown.
General MacArthur informed British Prime Minister Attlee and other Empire leaders that he would relinquish command over the area south of the Philippines. Australia and New Zealand forces operating there will take over under an agreement to be reached between their governments.
Rear Adm. Forrest C. Sherman reporting from Manila said Japanese envoys acknowledged the fleet had effectively ceased to exist. He noted U S knowledge of the destruction of warships and shipping shows Japan’s navy is defeated at sea, though its army and air force remain strong.
Washington Aug 23 Some congressional leaders consider postponing the September 5 reconvening for a week or two. The push to delay recall from summer vacation is strongest in the House. Prospects are there will be no reconversion legislation ready until later next month. Senate Democratic Leader Barkley says he has not heard of such a move but is unsure measures will be ready by September 5.
About 2,000 attendees witnessed the Clearspring carnival revival as a knightly tournament. War Price and Rationing Board reports prompt handling of canning sugar coupon applications after additional clerks and volunteers aided issuance. August allotment of 139000 pounds had caused earlier delays, but recent removals from rationing and continued support from regional and national administrators aim to speed up reconversion to civilian production.
Martinsburg reports Rev H E Hardt showcased two pound peaches from Berkeley county in the Eastern Panhandle. He produced 1945 specimens that weighed up to 20 ounces and measured 11 inches in circumference. Experts called them among the largest grown locally.
Mrs John T Shirley of Cumberland Maryland recalls the rare 1920s visit of young Prince Hirohito now Emperor of Japan. She describes him alighting at Harpers Ferry West Virginia and permitting a photo, speaking fair English and telling photographers to let the ladies take pictures.
In downtown Hagerstown store windows display Yuletide cards wrappings and related items four months before Christmas. The display aims to help relatives and friends of service members abroad to mail Christmas boxes in time. Although the war’s end has arrived the period for overseas gifts remains September 15 to October 15, with the War Department signaling possible extension beyond October 15.
Mark Miller and Vernon Holter county agents attended a Westminster meeting of Western Shore county agents. Timothy Grass was named for Timothy Hanson, credited with introducing it into the Carolinas.
