Eighteen workers vanished when a section of Herman Goering street subway under construction near the Brandenburg Gate collapsed at about 12 15 pm. Four men were rescued with broken bones and internal injuries. Police, firemen, and 300 soldiers aided rescue efforts at the scene.
Circuit court issues bench warrants for Adjt. Gen. Henry H. Denhardt head of the Kentucky National Guard after an indictment for criminal contempt. Warrants go to Franklin Jefferson and Harlan sheriffs. Denhardt, overseer of about 700 guardsmen during the August 3 primary election movement, had commanded troops at the scene.
Ten shares of Potomac Edison per cent preferred sold for 97 a share, a new high, nine more at 96.75, nine of 4 per cent preferred at 90. Alexander Hotel 4 per cent bonds due 1942 brought 40.25, Antietam Hotel common 0.06, Stat ion Furniture 6 per cent debentures at 82. Firefighters elect one new member and approve six applications at Williamsport meeting. Three firemen to attend Maryland summer school. Two dresses stolen from backyard. report filed with police.
The bodies of Will Rogers and Wiley Post, famed aviators, arrive after a 3500 mile journey from Alaska. Post is flown to Oklahoma City for services and burial, while Rogers rests in Glendale awaiting private rites. Police clashed with the public at Burbank airport during the transfer.
Three Frederick county defendants answer the State Banking Commission suit seeking statutory liability of stockholders in the failed Central Trust Company. They admit receiving small dividend checks in 1931 but deny it was a real dividend and offer to return the funds. They say they never subscribed to stock and were induced by bank officers to become alleged stockholders, asking dismissal of the suit. A tomato note concludes with Paul Sprecher of Broadfording bringing a two and one quarter pound Ponderosa tomato to the Daily Mail.

Hopson testified before the Senate lobby inquiry that he and his family earned 3,187,000 dollars in profits from 1929 to 1933 via private companies serving the Associated Gas and Electric System. He noted profits came despite half the period with no dividends, and the panel threatened further contempt if he resisted questions.
Berlin reports Jews barred from public recreation centers in Garmisch Partenkirchen the international resort tied to next year’s winter games. Municipal officials posted warnings that Jews are not allowed and further removals of Jews from public life were noted in Hanover region including jews from movie theatres.

Neighbors report the Mijanovich family, 900 Main Avenue, faced a burglar scare Sunday night when a noise in the cellar woke a child. The intruder proved to be a black and white spotted animal. the family chased it, cleaned up after, and the cellar returned to normal.
Sherman P Provard of Hagerstown Rt 6 was fined 10 dollars and costs after arraignment before Justice C Edward Heard for loaning his half brother Ray mond Pyle his auto driver's license. Pyle had been arrested and convicted last week for driving while drunk and served 30 days in jail in lieu of a fine. State officer Schultheis noted Pyle's license showed a man 32, though Pyle is ten years younger, triggering Provard's arrest.
Basil S. Aleshire of Virginia Avenue was jailed after pleading guilty to driving while intoxicated and failing to stop for a crash on the Middlebury pike that injured David Bonney of Mitchell Avenue. Fourteen days’ jail were imposed in a default on fines, with two related charges suspended. Bonney, once believed seriously hurt, testified he was speaking with a truck driver when hit.
Baltimore Aug 20 Major J Purdon Wright superintendent of state police announced arrests hereafter will supplant reprimands for reckless automobile drivers He said Reckless drivers should be curbed to reduce danger and accidents in the city and state plan aims at harsher enforcement of traffic rules
Twin Falls Idaho Aug 20 Depositors of the defunct Security National Bank of Fairfield Idaho began receiving refunds as the bank closed in March 1952. Since then deposits have been paid at 113 percent with some cash still to be distributed.
Earl Sapiro, band leader, wed one Hubbard twin in San Francisco. He hoped it was Pearl, since Pearl accepted his proposal, though he is unsure. He noted the license was signed by Pearl, and he forgives the mix up as the ceremony proceeded.
Governor Harry W Nice said plans call for January hearings on tax programs to be presented to the general assembly. He will ask House Speaker and Republican leaders to form a joint committee to conduct the hearings, with similar action by the Senate to form a finance committee and leaders. Continued on page 10.
Paris reports Italy acknowledged war in East Africa is inevitable and dismissed diplomatic channels. Baron Pompeo Aloisi, Italy’s delegate, indicated Mussolini would use manpower to disarm Ethiopia for the protection of colonies. He warned Italy could quit the League if pushed, predicting diplomacy and League efforts would fail.
John J. Bingley of Martinsburg suffered a fractured leg after being struck by John Burns' automobile late Sunday in Cumberland. Bingley, a Baltimore and Ohio shop employee and brother of M. L. Bingley, was hospitalized with a leg fracture and multiple head and body injuries. Burns was detained by a state officer for a Peoples Court hearing.
Residents in Indian Springs and Smithsburg observed heavy showers yesterday evening while Hagerstown appeared dry. In Smithsburg a brief hard shower occurred around 4 20 pm, and Indian Springs experienced a later wind and rainstorm with torrential rain lasting a few minutes.
British ministers rushed home from holidays to address the gravest international crisis since World War II era. An emergency cabinet meeting was to frame policy ahead of the League of Nations council in Geneva, as fears grew that small nations may unite to save the league from Italy’s aggression in Ethiopia.
