Speculating Over Chance of Trunk Line
Western Maryland Railroad centers are speculating today over the chances of Frank L Taplin rail magnate obtaining ICC permission to link the Western Maryland with the Pittsburgh and West Virginia and the Wheeling and Lake Erie systems to form a trunk line from the west to the eastern seaboard. Taplin has asked permission to connect Pittsburgh vicinity to McConnellsville 38 miles, the Western Maryland’s western terminus. The application will be acted upon next month. If carried out these proposals could give Taplin control of the Western Maryland, but railroad men question how he would obtain the two lines. It is suggested he may rely on a ruling against rival roads to then purchase those lines. Some see a Loree Pennsylvania interests motive to block Baltimore and Ohio expansion and secure a fifth east west trunk line with Delaware and Hudson as nucleus and Loree at the helm.
