Rail Union Settlement Now Likely
Washington AP reports ongoing railroad talks to resolve a four year labor dispute and avert a nationwide strike next week. A union spokesman said settlement efforts are on solid ground after Secretary of Labor Willard expressed confidence in good faith. Talks may center on binding arbitration of two main issues firemen jobs and train-crew makeup. The dispute surrounds proposed work rules Aug 28 that would end about 32 000 firemen positions, with unions prepared to strike if imposed while railroads argue firemen are unnecessary with diesel engines.

Mathias Presses Drought Relief Plan Amid Farm Struggles
Representative Mathias says he will introduce a drought relief bill to amend existing laws after farm groups and local farmers express dissatisfaction with current emergency relief. He notes relief is urgently needed for Frederick and Washington Counties as the drought worsens and current programs fail to aid the farming community. Kefauver calls for federal subsidies to railroads to cut hay freight by 80 percent, saying current reductions do not help farmers who face higher origin‑point costs. He urges continued federal appeals for aid.
