Messina Escape Port For Enemy Entered By Yanks
Allied forces closed the escape route for Axis troops in Sicily as the 3rd Division raced from Milazzo to Messina in 24 hours and bombarded the city. Allied headquarters reported a third commando landing near Messina eight miles from the city. Virtually all of Sicily was then in Allied hands after heavy bombardment and rapid advances southward.
