In the Franco Spanish frontier near Irun rebels attacked a six mile front facing government militia. Heavy casualties were inflicted as government forces with artillery and three forts repelled the assault lasting about five hours. One civilian, a 10 year old girl, was injured in Irun. Madrid loyalists held the town’s outskirts as reinforcements arrived from Bilbao.

A strong windstorm last night caused extensive damage in Hyndman Pennsylvania near Cumberland. A daring theft shocks Charlotte as an old Bible is reported stolen from the home of Mrs. A. E. Mangum. Police say the incident is baffling and under investigation.
Baltimore August 13 Nathan L Smith chief engineer of the State Roads Commission says traffic should be going over the temporary Harpers Ferry bridge by the second week in September The opening date is about a month later than Gov Harry W Nice estimated earlier Settlement of legal details with the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad and the State of West Virginia is needed before the bridge is paved for vehicles and a signal system to keep cars off when trains use it is installed About 200 feet of approaches from the current road to the bridge must be built The old tell bridge was washed out in March floods no road bridge has existed at Harpers Ferry since and the converted rail bridge will serve until a new structure is built which will take a year or more
Robert J. Bettes, 37, of Takoma Park, is jailed in Hyattsville on a charge of assaulting his seven year old daughter with a milk bottle. Arrest followed a warrant sworn by his wife Cora Bettes. Police Sgt. Frank Lane quoted the woman saying Bettes was intoxicated when he allegedly hurled the bottle at Caro Hine.
Statements of claim were filed for D. Webster Groh Sr. and Eleanor Grok in two damage suits totaling 100000. Prothonotary C Arthur Brame in Gettysburg saw the filings for injuries from an accident near Gettysburg about two years ago. Mrs Grok spent time in Gettysburg hospital and was more severely injured in the machine collision near Gettysburg.
Maryland crop reports show wheat 8.9 million bushels with excellent quality, while the hay crop will run about 33 percent below normal. The hay yield is described as the lightest in years, though other main farm crops are in good shape. The report comes from the Maryland crop reporting service, a joint effort of the University of Maryland and the U S Department of Agriculture.
Seattle's oldest newspaper the Post-Intelligencer did not publish for a second day as pickets patrolled sidewalks during the three day old strike of the American Newspaper Guild.
Leon Trotzky denies involvement in any counter revolutionary plot aimed at overthrowing Stalin as charged by Pravda. Pravda alleges direct cooperation between the Trotzky Zinoviev gang and German Gestapo, predicting executions after trials. Trotzky, exiled former Soviet war commissioner, lives in Norway.

Hollywood reports Jean Harlow confined to bed with second degree sunburn after a Catalina Island trip. Dr Sidney Burnap cited hypersensitivity and previous beach lounging incident as a warning, noting she forgot precautions during the trip.
Marshall Warne of Miami Florida won the Olympic platform diving title with 113.58 points in Berlin. Elbert Root of Chicago was runner up with 110.60 while Hermann Stork of Germany placed third and Erhardt Weiss fourth. The United States appeared poised to win the official Olympic men’s swimming team title, completing a US sweep of the four diving gold medals.
Dallas reports an 11 year old African American boy claimed a mad dog bite. Health officers dismissed the claim and called his parents who proposed the hickory treatment. The boy refused to bark again saying he could not.
The Weather Bureau reports progress in predicting droughts months ahead using a method tested from India. Dr. Weightman says predicting “femme years” could yield worthwhile U.S. results, with forecasts tied to spring monsoon patterns and historical data correlations.
Twenty two men and boys, many 14 to 16, were killed when a Canadian Pacific freight train struck a large truck carrying a political rally party near Louisville Quebec at a grade crossing one mile from the village. Dozens injured, several escaped. Rescuers and train crew worked to remove bodies as ambulances ferried the wounded to Three Rivers hospitals. The accident occurred early today and continued on page 10.
Damages totaling 33000 for personal injuries from an April 26 automobile crash were sought in three Montgomery County Circuit Court suits against Thomas I. Dawson of Rockville. Plaintiffs include Maggie Diehl and L. L. Diehl of Clarendon Virginia and Chauncey J. Gentzler, alleging injuries and driving under the influence. Dawson, fined but acquitted on related charges, resigned as Secretary of State after the accident.
A Rock postmark envelope containing a one dollar bill was found today in Arkansas. The State Highway patrol noted the unusual delivery and unsigned message with the phrase This is for weighing. The incident highlights a curious act of unknown origin.
