AP reports Vice President Spiro Agnew hints he will hand over financial and tax records to federal prosecutors amid Maryland corruption probes. Press secretary says Agnew will provide pertinent documents at the appropriate time. Beall had urged a Tuesday deadline, while investigators note past payments to Agnew by contractors. A judge previously tied to the grand jury probe chaired the panel.
In European markets the dollar strengthened, pushing gold to a three month low as prices slid to 97.75 an ounce. Traders cited improving U.S. trade data, a weaker gold market and rate expectations as factors behind the drop.
The 15 member United Nations Security Council opens debate on censure for Israel after it diverted a Lebanese airliner to an Israeli airfield amid attempts to seize four guerrilla leaders. The United States signals support for censure but may oppose harsher penalties. Lebanon seeks a compromise with some penalties possible.
In Nantucket Mass Joseph P Kennedy 26 was issued a motor vehicle negligently charge after an open car driven by him overturned on Nantucket Island. David A Kennedy 18 suffered a possible sprain as one of five girls riding with them was seriously hurt. The car crash occurred Monday afternoon and David was listed in satisfactory condition at Cape Cod Hospital. The Kennedy brothers and the other occupants were riding together when the vehicle flipped over on the winding path.
