Water consumption rises with mountain reservoir supply in rainy months. The Po yomac pumping station runs 24 hours daily and a second unit may start within days. A booster at Halfway could be activated if dry weather lasts, boosting capacity from 200 000 to 10 000 000 gallons daily.
Reports note a sharp drop in the fly population in Hagerstown as a one percent DDT solution was applied to chicken houses, pigsties, barns and pens. An Army A-26 bomber and an advanced trainer crashed in flames during a mid air collision near Grenier Army air field Manchester New Hampshire. School officials announce that kindergartens will open as early as August 25 or be placed on a waiting list. Superintendent Brish says the move completes a twofold program expanding the public system with nurseries at one end and Hagerstown Junior College at the other. The kindergartens will be full schools teaching fundamentals in preparation for first grade, not nurseries. They will not replace the wartime Child Care Center on Antietam Street, which had no age restrictions.
Richard David Mann, born in New Rochelle two months premature, weighed one pound ten ounces five days after birth and spent a month in an incubator. Now he is eighteen pounds with a bright smile, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard F. Mann.

In the Strait of Juan De Fuca the 10,081 ton Fenn Victory and the coastal motorship Diamond Knot collided at 1:10 a.m. The Diamond Knot had three holds flooded and engines flooded as crews took to lifeboats. The Fenn Victory remained wedged in the Diamond Knot's side while salvage crews were expected to arrive. No casualties were reported.
