U S Forces Hold Off Reds After Dawn Assault in Korea

U S artillery protected the Regimental Command Post as Fifth Regimental Combat Team units endured Communist machine gun and mortar fire. By Friday morning, about 249 Reds were counted killed in the Chinju battle while two Red regiments, possibly 6000 men, crossed the river and faced American advances with tanks and heavy artillery. AP reported U S 24th Infantry Division began a new push toward the Naktong bridgehead six miles southwest of Chanenyong with progress noted at 2:30 p.m. Friday.
