Adoption of Mary Lowno Spas Revoked Over Age Claim
In New York August 11 the adoption of Mary Lowno Spas by Edward W. Browning, a wealth operator, was annulled by a surrogate on grounds that Mary misrepresented her age. The decision followed a single issue raised by the district attorney and drew a large crowd outside the courthouse as Mary and her foster father left. The girl returned home to Astonia after the ruling, abandoning plans for a convent, while relatives agreed not to pursue further claims to Browning’s fortune. The family had spent the night at the Terminal Hotel, where Mary told proprietor John Mingan of their hardship.
