John Wesley Atkins, 34, of Baltimore, father of four, will serve one year in federal prison for writing a threatening letter to a woman friend. Atkins and the Baltimore woman met while working for the Navy at Portsmouth, Virginia. The threat followed her return to Baltimore last February. Assistant U.S. Attorney Paul J. Wolman Jr. said Atkins wrote the note on May 28, warning he would kill her unless she returned. Atkins testified he was in love and did not intend to carry out the threat. Judge W. Calvin Chestnut imposed the sentence.
