Antietam Sign Requested by City Officials

Antietam Battle Anniversary Committee led by George D B Alexander petitions the mayor and city council to erect a large sign at the South Potomac Street and Downsville Pike intersection guiding visitors to Antietam Battlefield. The inquiry ties to the 68th anniversary celebration and Sharpsburg Home Coming week, expected to be one of the county’s largest events in years.

Bester Long Firm to Rebuild Sharpsburg Road

Bester and Long, Hagerstown contractors, won the resurfacing contract for 1.04 miles from Sharpsburg to Burnside Bridge. Bid priced at $18,862, awarded by the State Roads Commission, aiding efforts by the Chamber of Commerce to attract visitors to Antietam Battlefield and the National Cemetery at Sharpsburg. The commission also approved 22.5 miles of road resurfacing across seven Maryland counties for $376,070.

Arrest Report: Albert Camppel Held on Chicken Theft Attempt

Hagerstown resident Albert Camppel was arrested by Patrolman Hamill on suspicion of attempted larceny of chickens. A farmer reported a man, later identified as Camppel, entered his coop days earlier and was caught amid milling chickens. The suspect agreed to work off the loss but failed to return.
