After a chamber meeting, officials say several industries are considering Hagerstown as a site. Committees study local properties to meet plant needs. If chosen, hundreds could gain employment, with some plants hiring men and others women workers. The Chamber aims to attract new industries in coming months.
A gasoline tank explosion destroyed the Emmitsburg Garment Company plant, a Shirley Coat Company branch, causing over 22000 dollars in damage. 23 workers escaped serious injury as flames spread quickly. Fire units from Fairfield and Taneytown assisted but could not stop the blaze. officials say the plant will be rebuilt. Nearby town assessors to begin property valuation Monday. M J Lindsay urged proper duties at Court House.
A severe storm last Thursday left Mrs. H. B. Richardson bedridden at 226 Summit Avenue after a thunderbolt and violent lightning display. Gordon H. Williams was fined $10 and costs by Justice John H. Either for driving without an operator's card.
British swimmer WH H Temme, captain of the Cornhill Swimming Club, opened the season by leaving Cape Grisses for Dover at 12 43 this morning. He swam about one hour and was two miles north of Cape Grisses as the sea ran calm and warm with little wind. The escort tug Alsace, a famed Channel swimming tender, accompanied the effort.
Louisiana flood control association formed at Baton Rouge to solidify policy on national food control.
Cumberland attorney Saul Praeger has been retained by Mrs. Hunter R. Stotler widow of Prohibition Agent Stotler to prosecute Reginald and Walters. Praeger spoke with Mrs. Stotler at her Keyser home and then with State's Attorney Harper Ballentine in Hagerstown to discuss clearing her husband of alleged intimacy with Mrs. Walters and pursuing the slayer case.
Political sharp question whether Dr. Nicholas Murray Butler, president of Columbia University, will pursue the presidency after President Coolidge said he would not run again. Butler, who returned from Europe, has long figured prominently in past Republican national conventions.
Aug 4 Downsville notes report a church supper August 17 on Isaac Long lawn to aid a fund. A congregational meeting approved adding a Bible School room at the Town Hall and work will start soon. Ladies Auxiliary prepared for August 6 festival with home baked goods on school grounds. Several local residents and guests visited or traveled, including Smithsburg, Hagerstown, and Washington figures, with minor injuries described after a sheep attack on a child at Cecil McAllister’s residence.
