Loyalist forces reported a smashing defeat of a rebel column near Avila as a squadron of liberal fliers routed a Fascist caravan of 70 trucks amid rain of bombs. Eighty rebels killed, column scattered, 11 trucks and machine guns seized. In Madrid authorities pursued Rightist sympathizers.
In Annapolis Maryland the Maryland Elks awarded a $50 cash prize to the Hagerstown Lodge for its work securing a memorial to 14 Williamsport schoolchildren killed in a train bus crash. The convention closed with Cumberland chosen as next year’s site.
All 150 workers withdrawn from soil conservation projects in the county about ten days ago have been absorbed by the WPA. Harold Seibert, local WPA director, announced today. Most workers were placed on local projects and several were sent to county endeavors including a farm to market road from Indian Springs to Pectonville. County projects list 50 on the northeast sewer, 40 on Pangborn park, 12 on a west end water line, 60 on Virginia avenue, 30 on Avon Road grading, with many others on Williamsport Funkstown and Sharpsburg sites.
Tempe Glenn Stotler an 11 year old girl from East Washington street suffered fractures to both arms when she fell from a pear tree at a relative’s home near Paramount. The injuries were set at Washington County Hospital.
Springfield, Aug 5. Efforts of hunger marchers to stage unemployment relief demonstration before the legislature were abandoned today. Charles Rossio, leader of the Illinois Workers Alliance, said the group, estimated at 350, retreated after a rainy night in the open under police guard.
Fire sparked by lightning destroyed a barn and a granary on Dorsey Wright’s farm near Centerville Maryland early today. Damage was estimated at 4000 dollars, partly insured.

A Great Eastern System bus skidded on a curve and hit a telephone pole injuring three people. Heywood Fowler of Lake Geneva Wisconsin Sam Kay of Detroit Michigan and Allen Griggs of Brain Massachusetts suffered leg and arm contusions and were treated at a hospital.
A Baltimore tailor, John K. Grables, 49, was jailed overnight and fined 6.45 after clipping race entry files at the Enoch Pratt Free Library. Detective Sergeant Frank Coleman arrested him. he appeared in court the next day.
John L. A. Jamnet, a nationally known handball coach, died of heart trouble at the Olympic Club in San Francisco. He collapsed while refereeing a match yesterday, aged 56.

Louise Madeline Pittman, raised by Atlanta couple the Garners in a hospital mix-up from 1919, fights to stay with them after a 1920 court order urged she remain with the Pittmans till age 18. The Garners intend court action to reverse the arrangement as Louise plans to travel to Atlanta to resolve where she will live.
WPA district director states no application from Hagerstown for federal airport improvements exists beyond a 1935 inquiry about a hangar. Mayor Wertz had claimed an application was filed and expected swift action. No file approval. hangar, runways, flood lighting were discussed with Fairchild Aircraft officials.

SYRACUSE New York August 5 AP. William S Andrews 78 husband of Mary Shipman Andrews author of The Perfect Tribute died today. He was a retired judge of the State court of appeals. Andrews was found dead at his home as preparations for his wife's funeral continued. Services for her were to be held Thursday afternoon. A double funeral will be held Friday.
Bobby Waugh once a lightweight title challenger died in Fort Worth Texas at age 42. He had been almost totally blind since 1924 and succumbed to tuberculosis last night.
Red Cross reports about half of the Potomac River valley toilet project done in Washington county after the March flood. 110 outside toilets financed to replace ones swept away. 55 completed under the June contract. Each toilet about $23.80. work to finish within 90 days from Weverton to Pearre for eligible Red Cross rolls unable to rebuild.
A heated protest led by David Dubinsky president of the Ladies Garment Workers delayed action today by the AFL executive council on charges that unions affiliated with the committee for industrial organization were guilty of insurrection.

Berlin August fifth Jesse Owens, Ohio State star, captured the 200 meter sprint title, marking his third championship of the 11th Olympic Games and the first Olympic triple since Paavo Nurmi in 1924. Mack Robinson of Pasadena finished second.
Kenneth Carpenter of Compton California won the Olympia discus championship with a record throw of 50.48 meters 165 feet 29 64 inches. His teammate Gordon Slinger Dunn finished second placing.
Bernard Farley 42 wins release after counsel argues ale bottles labeled ale may not contain ale. Farley arrested delivering what police believed to be ale under Oak Park prohibition law. He contends contents were not analyzed and cannot prove alcoholism.
A half grown Idaho dog of airdale and police dog parentage faced trial for the life and death of a 14 year old boy in Brockport New York. Justice Homer Benedict presided in a crowded village hall as the case drew national attention. Victor Fortune, the dog owner, faced a slew of witnesses while the defense sought to prove Idaho was not vicious but merely rolicking in water during the drowning incident.
Brooklyn, Aug 5. William Hessler, 31, known to police for extortion and kidnapping arrests, was found stabbed to death with an ice pick and packed in a trunk left on a Brooklyn lot. The scene lies near where John Bazzano, Pittsburgh club owner, was slain four years earlier in an unsolved case using the same method.
Annapolis Maryland August 5 Earl Lipchin of Anne Arundel County asked the circuit court to restrain officers from seizing his 40 pin ball coin machines. Judge Linwood L. Clarke scheduled an October hearing before the full bench noting the court will sit in equity to decide if the machines are evil chattel. Lipchin argued the machines are for amusement and yield no return beyond pleasure with each machine valued at 50 dollars.
Connie Jean, daughter of Mr and Mrs Russell Eardley of Williamsport, is recovering from a fractured collarbone after a fall.
A duckling born on Gus Bleich's farm in Chittenango Falls New York with a third leg uses it by sitting on it while the other two legs carry the body. The extra leg is smaller and trails behind when the duckling walks, drawing attention from locals.
Niagara Falls police held 26 year old Susie Stephenson after District Attorney Raymond Knowles said she admitted drowning her 18 month old son David Eugene in a washing machine and holding him under water for several minutes. He planned to have an alienist assess her mental condition.

King George II approves a temporary dictatorship in Greece to prevent a Communist led general strike. Metaxas dissolves the Chamber of Deputies, enforces martial law with strict censorship, and abolishes legislative work for now. Elections will be held when the situation stabilizes.
Harrisburg August 5 The state highway patrol held four youths on charges of possessing pistols under the state firearms act. Arrests were made late last night by Patrolman R E Deitrich who identified the youths as Chester Walsh 24 of Sykesville Maryland George E Gill 22 and Harvey Gill 16 both of Boring Maryland and Homer Smith of Wilkes Barre Georgia. Three pistols were found in the automobile, two loaded.
Carl French, 19, a local taxi driver for Marty Vaughn, bailed from his cab after the front wheels locked near Garrish's blacksmith shop on Mt Aetna Road. The taxi careened 100 feet through briars toward Antietam Creek, crashed into a tree five feet from the creek, and sustained heavy front-end damage.
County Treasurer Harry Keeady announced that about 66 percent of the 1936 state and county tax levy had been collected by July 1 from a total of 949000. Frederick County reports 52 percent of its levy collected with the year starting January 1 and total county levy around 479378 with 406585 collected to date.
