Manufacturer Testifies Navy Funds Used for Union Payoffs
Earl Bettendorf, a pallet maker operating plants in Ashdown Arkansas and Sandston Virginia, testified before the Senate Rackets Committee that payments to Teamsters official Joseph McHugh were made with government knowledge and Navy funds to obtain union consent for deliveries at Tobyhanna Pennsylvania. He said the payments totaled about 18,591 dollars though he noted only roughly 4,000 dollars was clearly accounted for and that FBI surveillance followed the arrangement for two years. Bettendorf claimed duress and defense of cooperating with authorities, while McHugh and another union agent faced federal indictments in Scranton for separate alleged payments.
