Washington County residents spend about five million dollars each year to keep homes in good running condition. Plumbers painters carpenters and other tradespeople charge rates that drive bills upward, and rising material costs add to the total. Government surveys across the country shed light on the scale of home repair expenses.

Newton D Baker patients were allowed to leave the hospital for a track event at Conoca Cheogue Speedway on April 2. Arrangements were made by Leonard D Moffitt Scam Squirrel of the Coolies and by the V FW and Military Order of Coalies. The Pentagon confirmed the bus cost and that patients could attend with waivers. refreshments were provided by the Ladies Auxiliary and other volunteers.
Baltimore AP reports dentists will discuss a federal law requiring states to offer free dental care for the indigent by 1978 at the Maryland State Dental Association meeting May 6 to 9. More than 39 dentists are expected to attend. Rep. Rogers Morton will participate.
Friday's warmer weather gave way to light frost across Washington County. D Paul Oswald at Bridgeport logged a high of 60 and a low of 31. Howard Beckenbaugh at Boonsboro recorded a high of 58 and a Friday night low of 31.
AP dispatch notes Congress poised to grant a 4 1 day no strike extension for the railroads and six shopcraft unions. Senate Labor Committee backs the measure 15 to 0 with White House pledges on fast legislation to resolve wage disputes and avoid a Wednesday 12 01 A M strike.
Washington County Council of Parents and Teachers schedules its May meeting at 7 30 p m in the Hagerstown Junior College Library. Officers for 1967 68 will be elected and installed by W Kemp Wilkes. The Local Unit Scholarship Award funded by PTA units will be presented. Tours of the new HJC campus accompany the meeting.
Washington County teachers and students attended the kickoff dinner for the 12th annual Goodwill Industries school clothing drive. Austin Bible reported on 1968 results, board members urged modern equipment and training for handicapped workers, and education officials offered cooperation to help independence and self-sufficiency through the drive.
A Maryland Penitentiary guard, Charles C. Terry, 41, was suspended amid a State Police inquiry into the penal system. Marion A. Sacks announced the suspension on Friday, while Warden Roger B. Copieger Jr. said departmental charges were filed, accusing Terry of conduct harming his credit in the classified service.
Newton Steers, a longtime Maryland Republican figure and former head of the Maryland GOP from 1962 to 1984, is named to become Insurance Commissioner. He holds degrees in economics and law from Yale, a certificate in meteorology from MIT, and previously headed the Iowa land delegation to the 1964 Republican National Convention, supporting Governor William Scranton. He ran for Congress in 1962 but lost to Carlton R. Sickles.
Several weekday evening routes will be eliminated beginning Monday including portions of the Loop and trips to Williamsport. Service after 6 p.m. other than Fridays will end for Lang Muar dow Shopping Center and South Hagerstown Shopping Center routes. The 7:15 and 0:15 p.m. Williamsport runs are removed and the 9:20 p.m. Williamsport trip runs only on Fridays. Friday night service remains until 9:30 p.m. with Antietam Transit manager Jack Helt.
Allegany County schools kept to normal activities as teachers vote against a strike by Local 1667 of the Federation of Allegany County Teachers. About 100 of the county's 750 teachers are represented, following an injunction from Judge Harold E. Naughton at the Board of Education's request.
CHICAGO AP Daylight Saving Time begins at 2 A.M. Sunday in four states and parts of others under a law by Congress. Clocks move ahead one hour and DST runs until the last Sunday in October. States may exempt themselves by legislature vote. Transportation Department may excuse compliance this year. Observances vary as Michigan Hawaii exempt. Alaska granted earlier. Indiana requests Central Time alignment. Kentucky gains partial exemption. Petitions for changes come from North Dakota Texas Nebraska Kansas.
Confraternity of Christian Doctrine members will gather at St Marys Catholic Church on Tuesday May 2 at 6 30 pm for an evening mass and talks by Father Wharton of Mount St Mary's College Emittburg. Eight parish members will receive diplomas for teaching religion. A social hour follows.
