Meridian report says at least 15 killed and 80 injured as a tornado hit Braxton yesterday afternoon. Red Cross notes 40 taken to d Lo Hospital in Hattiesburg. some dead since. Business district destroyed. widespread property loss estimated at one million dollars. Public panic hindered early relief efforts.
A terse alert describes an 18 year old Armenian girl being transported by two men about 22 and a Buick from Cumberland into Hagerstown. Police were told to arrest and hold the trio until Cumberland authorities are notified. No arrests made yet. A description of the missing trio is on file.
John A. Bowler of Lynchburg aged 24 pleaded guilty in Martinsburg Circuit Court to killing Garfield H. Miller a taxi driver from Hagerstown on February 1 near Falling Waters. Bowler had twice been an inpatient at Staunton Western State Hospital for the insane and was once discharged as cured before later recommitments.
Vernon Long of near Keedysville sustained a badly cut head when a rock fell into a cistern he was digging for his brother Otia Long. Dr. Brown dressed the wound. The accident kept him housed for days, but he is now able to be out.
The Retailers' Bureau of the Chamber of Commerce surveys merchants on early closing. Questionnaires ask if stores should close five days a week during June July and August. Merchants wavering will be pressed by clerks' association committee. Detectives from Pittsburg seize Chandler car found abandoned on Cavetown pike. stolen in that city.
The Board of Education plans to appoint county public school trustees next Tuesday and grant them fuller powers to recommend teachers. Some boards have died or resigned, requiring replacements, while others have not been as active as desired. The annual budget, prepared by Superintendent B. J. Grimes, will be submitted to the board and then to the County Commissioners.
Dublin April 27 Sinn Fein forces ambushed crown troops in an eight hour battle at Timilkin County Galway. Constable Boyland was killed and a constable and a sergeant mortally wounded. Casualties among attackers unknown.
The Women's Clubs of Cavetown Boonsboro Sharpsburg Ringgold Williamsport and Hancock held their regular monthly sessions. Miss Ola Day District Supervisor demonstrated millinery dressmaking and home made dress forms. She urged homemakers to train in materials use for outfits and foods and planned May sessions on landscape gardening noting rising protest and attendance.
In Thurmont annual corporation election H R Rouzer was elected Burgess and J M Creager and H B Beachley were elected Commissioners. Four Commissioner candidates ran. A bond valued at $6 000 was borrowed for funds to build an auxiliary light plant if needed. A divorce bill was filed by P Elwood Stigers against Ruth B Stigers through attorney John T Mason of Tancock.
Milan April 27. Many people killed and wounded in new clashes between Fasciati and Communists across Italy in the last 24 hours. At Turin three anti socialists were killed with others wounded. Communist headquarters burned. A Fasciati student died at a funeral in Calcanisetta Sicily. Socialists attacked, four killed, 100 wounded. Order restored at Flume by troop reinforcements.
Frederick, Washington, and Carroll officers joined Pennsylvania authorities to pursue a 28 year old man who attempted a daylight window robbery in Hanover. Sheriff Wertenbacher fired as the fugitive vanished into a tree near Graceham, the man was shot by a Hanover officer during the escape, and treated in Taneytown. He bought a Frederick Hagerstown ticket then walked toward Thurmont aiming to flag a train, with possible hiding near the city.
Mr and Mrs C B Van Allen of Warnaw New York spent the winter at Cocoanut Grove near Miami Florida and stopped in for a few days as guests of Mr and Mrs John W Feldmann They became acquainted in Worlds and shared memories of their summer in the Far South while recounting fishing tales
The 1921 second year road program guided by John N. Mackall calls for about 150 miles of highway in 1 to 5 mile links across counties. Work proceeds with or without federal aid, with equity in distribution and adjustments possible next year. In Washington county the plan covers Hagerstown to Pennsylvania Line five miles, Hagerstown to Williamsport five miles, and Keedysville beyond Sharpsburg five miles, with contracts or readiness depending on funding.
A fire in the rear meat room of the Harry P Myers store at Franklin and Potomac streets late last night threatened adjacent property. Patrolman Hamill found the blaze at 12:30 am. Incendiary theft is suspected but contents were burned beyond identification. Firemen, wearing masks, were nearly overcome by smoke this morning.
Frank L. Fitz Simons official tester reports Washington county has many high quality cows. Eldridge's cow led butterfat with 68 pounds and milk at 1324 pounds. J R Brown and Sons owned the top milk producer at 1597 pounds. Other listed farmers include Milton Remsberg Herbert Athy J Barry Doub C V Eldridge and C B Nigh.
In London on April 27, Britain seeks clarification from Berlin on Article 1 of the new German indemnity proposals. The cabinet met to review the German offer, with a copy now held by the Foreign Office. A special Orphans' Court session opens in Williamsport for the estate of the late 7% Mr. Herbert.
Richard J. Hamilton, former editor and part owner of The Daily Mall, who has been in California since last summer, plans to return to Hagerstown soon and stay. He traveled by automobile to California and has been in Long Beach since arriving on the coast, and he intends to engage in some business in Hagerstown.
Berlin April 27. Dr Walter Simons German Foreign Minister tendered his resignation to President Ebert amid fierce industrial opposition to indemnity proposals. Ebert refused to accept. Reichstag members criticized the indemnity offer. Washington note to Berlin requested amendments to make some points more definite.
John B. Ferguson former city engineer whose reappointment was confirmed in special session had not decided whether to accept. He planned a conference with Mayor Ankeney to discuss resignation and his name being presented at the meeting. His resignation remains unsettled and the proceedings are irregular. LEAPS INTO WELL TO DIE. Herman Fahs 37 ended his life by jumping into a well near Bigomount after despondency from low farm prices.
Paris reports German and French Communist groups coordinating revolutionary disorders for May 1. An Exchange Telegraph dispatch from Geneva says they have been secretly meeting in Switzerland to frame the outbreak program.
Silas 7 Kerns, an expert color printer at the Haffelfinger wallpaper factory in Hanover, was fatally injured when caught in a machine. His head and face were badly lacerated and his right arm and abdomen crushed. William A. Tavor of Washington is visiting for a few days on business.
Washington says the government is handling Germany's proposed reparations in a proper informal manner. No formal communications have been sent to Berlin or the Allies. The moves follow Secretary Hughes notes urging attention to Allied governments for resumed negotiations.
A side swipe at the corner of Pennsylvania avenue and Forest Drive caused two touring cars to collide. Daniel Meyers, heading from Pennsylvania toward Line's Ice-cream factory, swung right as a second car driven by Walter Harris darted onto Forest Drive. Both cars suffered a bent frame and twisted fenders. witnesses suspect Harris was speeding, a matter to be settled at 2 PM today.
Scranton report says a Delaware and Hudson train struck an automobile carrying Arthur Walsh 25 of Brooklyn and Geo Smith 28 of Scranton. Smith died instantly. Walsh burned to death as firefighters battled the blaze. Smith was a noted boxer and former Atlantic Fleet middleweight champion.
Women were barred from Thurmont's annual town election by a charter clause restricting eligibility to males under the nineteenth amendment. Officials elected were Burgess N. R. Rouser and councilors J. M. Creager and H. D. Baachley. Miss Eva Shapiro of Baltimore visited Mrs. M. J. Simon.
Admiral Benson, chairing the U S Shipping Board conference, urged a 15 percent wage cut as the basis for settling the threatened marine strike. He argued current economic conditions justify the reduction. Marine workers and engineers disagreed, with W S Brown leading the engineers opposing any cut.
Riga April 27 Captain Marian Cooper from Jacksonville Fla a former Kosciusko Escadrille member says Soviets are in power in Russia to stay while the Whites are nearly nonexistent He notes more than a half dozen Americans still in Moscow area prisons including Captain Emmett Kilpatrick and Mrs Harrison a newspaper writer and says he escaped from a Russian prison near Moscow.
New York April 37 Indication that trend owing to high costs is to ward smaller and better newspapers T R Williams business manager of the Pittsburg Press and prominent of the American Newspaper Publisher's Association told the Association's convention today and that such newspapers would have corresponding higher subscription and advertising rates He said production rates will not reach the low potatos of home years ago.
