30 Years Ago Guards Left for War Today
Thirty years ago today Bagers town witnessed a vivid scene as the First Maryland Regiment was ordered into federal service for the war with Spain. Company B and local officers entrained at Arlington, Maryland, under Colonel William Lane. Captain George L Fisher led Company B with Lieutenants Hawken and Sands. A wild parade by patriotic groups escorted the troops to the railroad station led by Chief Fire Marshal C. L. Spangler. Other officers who entrained included Major C. A. Little, L. D. Syester, L. F. Smith, and H. H. Keedy Jr. Dr W.B. Morrison served as medical examiner for Company B, and Deputy Sheriff M. B. Flora accompanied the troops, later killed in service.
