Lt. William M. Huff of Hagerstown and six P-47 pilots joined a 9th Air Force Thunderbolt strike near Olpen as 75 German tanks pressed into the Ruhr. Huff’s group bombed and strafed at close range, prompting a German withdrawal after 125 troops moved to surrender. Huff, a 373rd unit member, previously studied at Hagerstown Business College and worked for Fairchild Aircraft. He has family in Hagerstown and Waynesboro.

Petain Enters Switzerland En Route to Trial in France
Bern April 24 aged Marshal Petain entered Switzerland from Germany after declaring willingness to stand trial in France. King Leopold of Belgium, who surrendered in 1940, was expected to reach the Swiss frontier. Pierre Laval, Vichy arch collaborator, appeared near Liechtenstein but was refused entry. Laval faces a Marseille death sentence in absentia for intelligence with the enemy. Showers Continue After Heavy Pennsylvania Freeze
Rain fell heavily in parts of the county last night while the southern area saw lighter showers. Keedysville observer J A Miller noted .15 inch. The morning low was 49, down from 62 yesterday. The region avoided the severe frost that damaged northern Pennsylvania counties with some areas hitting 20 degrees. Giles Named Army Air Forces Pacific Commander
