65 Missing In Ship Disaster
SEATTLE April 24 The Liber ty ship John Straub laden with explosives for the Alaska war theater broke its back and sank with a presumed loss of 65 of the 80 men aboard B M Murphy superintendent of the Alaska Steamship Company announced today Master of the Straub a new vessel making its third voyage was Capt A W Westerholm of Seattle a veteran of 26 years with the Alaska Steamship Company 40 merchant seamen 14 Navy men and the cargo security officer were reported lost The wreck occurred 21 miles off Sanak Island The Coast Guardsmen found no evidence of fire All but one of the lifeboats and rafts have been accounted for The accident occurred at 530 am Wednesday The Straub north bound was reported to have parted off the engine bulkhead and the forward section sank immediately The 15 survivors were taken to the Army hospital at Cold Bay Only two survivors names available Bruce S Spang and Kenneth Baker The survivors were picked up by two Army boats The officers missing include Chief Mate Lester A Fredericks Second Mate Carl Angvik Chief Engineer Axel Holmquist First Assistant Engineer Harold Tetter Second Assistant Engineer John Rauch Second Assistant Engineer William Secunda of Butler Pa

Walter A. King, guard at a Fair child plant, joined a fishing party at Potomac Rapids below Chain Bridge near Washington DC on Saturday. He caught 11 shad totaling 35 pounds after a long night shift.
