Folkes Guilty Of Murder On Pacific Limited
Robert E. Lee Folkes, 20, a Negro cook, was found guilty in the first degree of murdering Mrs. Martha Virginia James, 21, aboard the Southern Pacific West Coast Limited. He faces the death penalty in Oregon gas chamber after sentencing set for April 26. The case centers on Folkes entering Mrs. James's berth as she resisted and dying on the California bound train. The Pennsylvania Railroad station on West Washington Street is undergoing renovations for three weeks. Improvements include new toilets, heating plant, sewer connections, doors, roof, and interior and exterior painting.
