Team Reaches North Pole By Land Route
A six man expedition led by Ralph Plaisted reached the North Pole by surface travel, becoming the first to do so since 1808. After a 44 day 474 mile trek across the polar ice cap, the team camped on a large block of ice at 23 degrees below zero awaiting a weather recon plane to verify their position and photograph the moment. Two members were unable to rejoin due to a grounded support plane caused by bad weather.

Army picks two firms to make rifles alongside Call's Inc
