Rev. Frederick B. Fisher 56 a former Bishop of India and Detroit Central Methodist pastor died Friday at Henry Ford Hospital after illness. Born in Greencastle Pennsylvania on February 4 1882 he once resigned his bishopric to return to preaching and served in Ann Arbor before years in India as missionary and bishop. Death due to coronary thrombosis.
William Duncan Kilpatrick of Detroit will deliver a free lecture on Christian Science at the Maryland Theatre in Hagerstown on Easter Sunday after 1 30 with a 3 30 start. Kilpatrick is a member of The Mother Church Board of Lectureship in Boston. Public is invited.
A tar and oil blaze flared in a rear yard near the Bester and Long office on South Potomac street. Firemen rushed to the scene and stood by for two hours as black smoke rose high. no damage resulted.
The Senate Naval Committee backed a 1.159 billion naval expansion bill, up 35 million from the House. It authorizes three 45,000 ton battleships at about 90 million each, increases aircraft carrier tonnage by 20 million, and raises auxiliary vessels to 26 from 22 with a projected 30 million savings. The package also reallocates 15 million for experimental uses including 3 million for a fighter training ship.
Arrests on the Middleburg pike for exceeding 60 mph led to fines. McKean Polk of Chambersburg paid $101.45 after trial before Magistrate C Edward Heard. Richard Stenger of Mason and Dixon posted $101.43 for a 2 PM hearing. State Police made the arrests.
The Senate Civil Liberties committee on April 16 warned that anti unions have become a menace to democratic government. The panel asked for 60 000 to continue studying violations of free speech and labor rights, noting 90 000 appropriated over two years. It cited employers using new devices and modernized schemes to thwart labor organization since the Wasner Labor Relations law passage.

A Navy recruiter will be at the Post Office building in Hagerstown on Monday April 18 to examine applicants for enlistment. He will give a short talk on the local radio station from 12 to 12:15 p.m. His topic is The Development of Gun Powder.
Horace Blunt and Granville Richardson along with Maurice Saunders, all of Chambersburg, were arraigned before Magistrate W. L. Kieffer on numbers racket charges and held on $1,000 bond each. Blunt was detained at police headquarters awaiting a bondsman while Richardson and Saunders were committed to jail. Two other suspects remain at large as investigators describe the scheme paying writers 25 cents on the dollar for entries. The operation used horses and daily bets from one to 50 cents with payouts tied to first three races and a promised rate of five dollars per penny invested. A Hagerstown taxi driver involved in the arrest was released.
In Sudbury Ontario on Good Friday a leaky canoe caused a rescue attempt that ended in the deaths of four boys Armand Ranger Paul Ranger and two companions named Ross and John Dinwoody. George Dinwoody saved two others as the craft sank and the remaining children crawled onto rotten ice before it gave way.
In Hebron Maryland Sheriff Truitt arrested Charles Smack a 21 year old truck driver one hour after Henry Duffel aged 30 was shot twice at a local filling station following an argument. Duffel died en route to Peninsula General Hospital after first aid.
Oleg Nelson aged 93 longtime national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic died at his daughter's home in Slater Iowa after several weeks of illness. He served as national G A R commander from September 1935 to September 1936 and had suffered a stroke recently before his final decline.
A white collie belonging to Sen. George L. Radcliffe was rescued Friday by a lifeboat after leaping from the Gov. Albert C. Ritchie ferry in Annapolis. Captain Merle Dawson launched the lifeboat. the ferry was delayed about 20 minutes as the dog was brought aboard and leashed for the rest of the trip to the Eastern Shore.
Thousands of pilgrims walked the Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem on Good Friday as Christians Muslims and Jews observed spring festivals under heavy police protection to guard against terrorism. No incidents were reported during the ceremonies.

A seven foot sailfish caught by Joseph B. Schindel is mounted on the wall at Schindel Rohrer & Co on South Potomac Street. He landed it near Miami Florida in February after a 25 minute trolling battle. The specimen is believed to be the city’s first sailfish on exhibition.
One hundred parking meters will be installed in Waynesboro's business district next week for a six months trial. The meters are the same type used in this city.
