Millions of amateur astronomers watched a coppery red Moon during a total lunar eclipse Friday night and early Saturday. Viewing varied by cloud cover, but clear spots appeared along the Eastern Seaboard and in parts of the Far West. The umbra began at 10 19 p m EST with full obscuration at 11 22 p m. the Moon emerged from darkness at 2 25 a m. Experts say sunlight refracted in Earth’s atmosphere caused the reddish hue as the Moon moved through a cone-shaped shadow extending 860 000 miles into space.
President Johnson announced he will not seek re election and nominated CAB Chairman John H. Crooker of Houston to a six year term to ensure Democratic control of the Civil Aeronautics Board regardless of the November outcome. Crooker was appointed last February 16 to fill a vacancy, the earliest CAB reappointment on record.
Former Defense Secretary Robert S. McNamara aids Sen. Robert F. Kennedy with two television tapes as part of Kennedy's bid for the Democratic nomination. Theodore Sorensen confirms the tapes and recalls the Cuban missile crisis discussions with Kennedy and his brother.
U S B52 bombers killed about 200 Viet Cong in a saturation raid over Vinh Binh Province in the Mekong Delta. South Vietnamese troops found bodies four hours after the strike and reported ground clashes in Pegasus and Complete Victory operations near Saigon.
Stokely Carmichael, former SNCC leader, calls Dr. Martin Luther King Jr a martyr whose assassination will unify black people. He warns that King’s death could push some to take up guns, contrasts with King’s message of love and forgiveness, and notes H Rap Brown, now jailed on a federal gun charge, succeeded him.
In Glasgow many were attacked as crowds left venues with no apparent motive. An 18 year old was killed and over 20 injured from stabbings and beatings. Police said there is no clear cause for the violence.

AP reports scattered sniper fire disrupted a strict curfew as racial unrest in Kansas City cooled after three nights of violence. Six Black residents were shot dead, 133 were arrested mostly for curfew violations, and fires left hundreds homeless. Authorities say 460 police, 75 highway patrolmen, and 1,000 guardsmen reinforced the curfew. Eight young Black leaders met with Mayor Davis and the City Council demanding the police chief be fired and equal treatment under arrest.
