The Nigerian government is systematically reducing American influence and will cut the Peace Corps staff to 72 volunteers in the northern region by month’s end. Previously numbering over 900, the corps faced a history of tensions from the Mitchellmore affair to civil war.
The Pentagon ordered Lockheed Aircraft Corp to demonstrate in writing within 15 days its ability to speed factory progress on the Cheyenne helicopter or risk termination of the Army contract worth billions. Only nine of 27 Cheyenne helicopters per hour had been produced since the first model two years earlier. The Army budgeted $93 million this year and $302 million in 1970 for the project, a fast, maneuverable gunship intended for Vietnam use.
Vietnamese and American forces reported intensified Viet Cong rocket and mortar attacks across South Vietnam. In Tay Ninh and surrounding provinces civilians and soldiers suffered multiple deaths and injuries as bases were shelled and a transformer station bombed. Official counts varied but amid rubble and ceasefire chatter, casualties included American and South Vietnamese personnel, with dozens killed and wounded and extensive property damage.
Vietnamese hamlet official Phan Duy recounts narrowly surviving a Viet Cong mass execution during the 1968 Hue massacres. He describes hiding as deaths mounted, the captors selecting prisoners for a river crossing, and a failed trenching plan that enabled a miraculous escape.
Arab and Israeli forces fought on the Jordanian front with Jordanian regulars joining an Israeli patrol clash near the Sea of Galilee. Officials reported no Israeli casualties, five Jordanians hurt by sunakra, and continued cross river hostilities as Cairo and Cairo backed statements disputed any shift in King Hussein's six point plan.
