Dr. Welsh outlines state and federal TB ratings for Maryland herds. More than 200000 cattle examined, 854 infected destroyed, 477 premises inspected. Herd testing twice yearly to keep public health first, with inspections and destruction of infected animals when needed.

Baltimore April 9 The battle of the bookies continued as Maryland Jockey Club works through the relief season changes. A tax plan aims to raise over 5 million annually and legalize bookmakers with five extra racing days at Maryland tracks. A meeting at Pimlico discussed the May 1 effective date and Governor Nice’s pending signature. Officials anticipate further track director and Racing Commission meetings before policy is set. Spring meets at Bowie and Havre de Grace end soon, with Pimlico’s April 29 spring opening most affected. Comptroller Gordy must craft regulations. Baltimore leader William Curran urged rejecting all bookmaking licenses as pernicious gambling.
Officials from the State Comptroller’s office said licensing and taxing bookmakers are being shaped by a section of the law that could grant a monopoly to a single bookie in central Baltimore. The amendment, added by the House ways and means committee, bars more than one bookmaking establishment within 500 feet of another.
