Fair Board Plans Racing Meet at Hagerstown Grounds
The Hagerstown Fair grounds begin track reconditioning and general improvements this week ahead of a ten day spring racing meet set to open Tuesday May 19. President A K Coffman will convene officers and directors to finalize plans as high class runners are expected to run after Pimlico. Repairs include rebuilding forty feet of grandstand wall that collapsed into the track during recent rain. The track survived winter well. minor grading will yield a fast surface.

Good deed costs boy bicycle in flood relief drive
In Crisfield Maryland on April 6 a 41 cost boy scout Elmer Wharton gave a dollar and his bicycle to flood relief funds. He earned the money in his father’s garage and saved the dollar himself but a thief stole the bicycle while he attended a troop meeting. In Huntington West Virginia three members of the Herschel Hager family were injured in a crash that killed seven year old Ralph Hager. The cab driver father survived with injuries and Clifford Hager suffered possible back injuries.

Plane Crash Kills Five Army Men in Storm Tossed Mission
Five soldiers aboard a Langley Field flight perished when their heavy bomber went off course, hitting a mountain 50 miles west of its intended route after departing Pottsville. Boy Drowns in Quarry Near Williamsport
George Harlan Porterfield 13, son of J Harlan Porterfield of 1300 Virginia Ave, drowned in a quarry off Armstrong Ave in Halfway. Boat capsized Saturday evening as he paddled across. Companions along the edge could not help. Sergeant Knode and Lt E J Chapman secured a boat from the Potomac River and recovered the body with grappling hooks about 15 minutes later. Coroner Heard ruled accidental drowning. He attended South Potomac Junior High and Trinity Lutheran Sunday school. Survived by sister Helen Catherine Porterfield in New York City and brother Milton L Porterfield at home, grandfather Milton W Porterfield. Funeral today at 3 pm at Rose Hill Cemetery with Rev. Dr. J. S. Simon officiating.
