London AP reports Foreign Secretary James Callaghan named to succeed Harold Wilson as leader of Britain's Labour Party. Callaghan won heavy support from Labour MPs over Michael Foot, with an official vote count due. Foot, aged 62, was a left winger and the favorite to win before the result. The palace was expected to assent to the ballot winner shortly.
Prime Minister Harold Wilson says stepping down from the Labour leadership is like leaving the most exciting job in the British realm. He cites uniting England in the fight against inflation and unemployment as a major achievement while noting the Rhodesia crisis and Northern Ireland tensions.
