Governor Tawes urged passage of a federal intergovernmental cooperation act to improve relations between federal, state, and local governments. He said the measure would require all federal aid to pass through state agencies to ensure coordinated services and avoid fragmented funding.
Local obituaries report the deaths of Mrs. Margaret Getridge at 335 N Potomac Street in Canonbridge West Virginia widow of James Franklin Getridge with service at Nor Mant Funeral Home. Also Mrs. Gertrude Spitzer 82 of Funkstown and Mrs Emma Crankleton Bawsard 80 of Summit Avenue. The Hagerstown Lions Club sponsors a six lesson seminar on home furnishings led by Jack Nason Lindsey. It runs April to May at Franklin Court Auditorium from 7:00 to 9:30 PM, with a fee of one dollar. registration limited to 200, proceeds to Lions Club.
Brig. Gen. Joseph Stilwell, 38, suffered fractures to the lower back pelvis and both heels after a sky diving jump at Ft Bragg. He remained in serious condition at Womack Army Hospital following surgery, with bruises to the chest and face. Stilwell, a USMA graduate, commands the Army’s John F. Kennedy Center for Special Warfare and later led the center since February.
President Johnson disclosed he borrowed about $100,000 to meet 1964 and 1965 tax obligations. He explained at a White House ceremony and in a later news conference that much of the tax money had been deducted from his paychecks, with some borrowed from private investments to clear his accounts with Uncle Sam.
The State Department won approval from the Appropriations Committee to use Marines and Navy Seabees to guard and help build foreign service buildings abroad. Hoffa’s statement defended by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters.
Pen ConRct AL report says Caroline County school superintendent Wilbur Hoopengardner announces a five year plan to abandon all Negro schools starting 1966 67 with eighth graders moved to predominantly white schools next year and the full integration by 1970 72. Teachers would be integrated as well.
The Associated Bus Co. began adding a chemical to fuel to mask exhaust odors. President Anthony Sebastian says the fragrant fumes fill the garage and will help in hot weather when they reach street level, though officials note no change in emissions.
CHESAPEAKE agent for the Farmers’ Combine that bought 100000 acres of the Great Dismal Swamp in February says they plan to build the Bread Bowl of the Fash. Heal estate agent Irving M. Greenberg of Cranbury represented Atlantic Farms Joint Ventures in acquiring peat bog and tidewater plain in Virginia and North Carolina from American Land Co. Greenberg said associates will first develop the holdings for small grains wheat rye and soybeans.
New York markets opened higher with modest gains for Du Pont Xerox and Union Carbide. Big three automakers rose, steels mixed, rails edged up with New York Central Santa Fe and Illinois Central advancing slightly. United Artists gained on film reports, Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton moved up on heavy volume, Mesabi Trust held steady, savings and loan shares showed mixed results.
