June 29 dispatch reports a Japanese column advancing from Mo-Tien Pass toward Liao Yang along the eastern road to sever Russian northern communications. General Count Keller commands a Russian defense at a forted position overlooking the road near the Pass as Kuropatkin operates near Haicheng with Russian units.
Silas C. Swallow of Harrisburg Pa was nominated for President on the Prohibition ticket by acclamation after General Miles declined. The platform calls for liquor traffic suppression, initiative and referendum, divorce law reform, polygamy suppression, tariff commission, direct senatorial election, and voter qualifications based on character.

Russians suffered 90 dead on the heights and 270 Japanese casualties. Russians retreated toward Shi Mucheng, while Japanese secured 88 prisoners and maintained the heights.
Denver July 30 The special land commission led by W A Richards Gifford Pinchot and F H Newell appointed by President Roosevelt will meet August 3 4 5 at the national livestock association headquarters in Denver to discuss grazing on arid lands and forest reserves and to report to the president for draft legislation. Secretaries Hitchock and Wilson indicate they may attend if duties allow. Association officers urge Western stockmen to join the meeting.

MINES CLOSED TELLURIDE COLO JUNE 30 The Smuggler Union mines employing 200 men were closed today and the companys mill will shut after the ore on hand is disposed of. Rumor says several other mines may cease operations in a few days. The reason for the closure has not been made public.
