Patrick J. Thornton 45, a Kern City mining man, died after surviving the Central hotel blaze that began early Wednesday. He reached the stairs through flames, was carried to the street, and hospitalized with severe burns. an inquest will fix his identity and funeral is set for 3 pm tomorrow.
At Guild Hall the Episcopal church young ladies hosted an enjoyable social with refreshments and a festive display of lanterns around the hall and grounds. A separate benefit social at Mr. and Mrs. Wharff on D street by M E church offered a program of recitations and vocal numbers to a largely attended crowd.
ER M Smith sues Pacific Consolidated Oil Co for 8796 as payment for services as superintendent from Nov 19 1900 to June 1 1901. He alleges his compensation is reasonable and fixed by the complaint.

Pacific Power Develop Company announces electric current will be restored tonight enabling use of electric lights instead of candles as repairs at the canyon power flume reach completion. A full test of the new wheel and generator last Monday confirmed success and transmission lines were inspected to ensure the system restarts smoothly. An earlier two week estimate was extended by an unexpected setback caused by a Centered hoteline fire damaging connections, but the remaining repairs are finished and the system will be renewed for power and lighting when the current is switched on.
Foresters of America Court Bakersfield No 170 held an ordinary meeting last evening. Twelve new members were initiated, bringing the weekly total to twenty eight. Eight applications remain on the desk awaiting action.
Charle s P Fox reports asphaltum exposures along the Southern Pacific line in Uvalde county about 100 miles from San Antonio with surface indications and leases totaling 2100 acres. He also notes high grade asphalt base oil found near Ada Indian Territory from a 98 foot well and a 6000 acre lease near Ada on the Frisco line.
