New attorney joins Haywood defense in Boise trial

Walter E. Macormick of Chicago appears at the defendant Orchard's counsel table as the tenth lawyer. Witnesses testifying include Mrs. Lottie Day and John D. Elliott, with claims of threats against Governor Steunenberg and Orchard's stated intent to “get even” if it was the last act. The defense and state spar over cross examination and witness handling as the case resumes.

More Indictments Against Hoodlums In San Francisco

Five men, joining three already captured in last night’s raid on hoodlums who attacked a street car near the Chutes, are known to the Grand Jury and indictments will be returned once the evidence warrants formal action.

In San Francisco, June 26, the prosecution urged that the Oliver Grand Jury remains valid, opposing defense claims the current panel expired last February. The dispute centers on the legality of indictments against Vice-President Louis Glass of Pacific States Telephone and Telegraph Company.

Schmitz to be sentenced in extortion case in San Francisco

Eugene E Schmitz, former mayor, convicted of extorting money from Jos Malfanti, will be sentenced before Superior Judge Dunne tomorrow. Four other extortion charges against Schmitz will be set for trial, with District Attorney Langdon confirming immediate trials on one of the counts and noting trials will proceed separately as required by law.

Burned while cooking breakfast in Keene area

Mrs J H Barnes of Rowan near Keene was seriously burned when kerosene ignited while she tried to start a stove. Her clothes caught fire and she suffered burns to the back and limbs. She was rushed to Kern City, then Bakersfield, and placed under care of Dr Shafer with prognosis very serious.

Boy Takes Poison After Family Dispute Over Berries

Earl Lane a 14 year old of Lawndale Los Angeles suburb drank strychnine after his mother refused to buy berries from a peddler and warned him not to speak of it. He told her if she told his father he would take poison. He died within fifteen minutes. His father is D Lane a teamster.

Weather and a San Francisco commitment case

The forecast for San Francisco and vicinity calls for fair weather this afternoon tonight and Thursday with morning and night fog and a likely warmer night with a fresh north wind. A separate item notes a former State Insane Asylum inmate held for six or seven months in 1905 with his son applying for commitment. Elliott denied wearing a straight jacket and said he had a recovery certificate upon release.

Milwaukee Sailed For Salvador On Cruiser Milwaukee

The Milwaukee under Commander Chas Govern sailed from Mare Island after Navy orders to La Union Salvador. The move followed dispatches from Central America signaling rising trouble. The ship passed the Golden Gate about 1 pm and headed south.
