Wisconsin Democrats Rally for Silver Gold in Illinois Meeting

A huge crowd filled the edifice as Secretary of State Richenschen opened the session and temp chairman Alexander Hamilton II spoke for silver, claiming the Northeast and West split on gold vs silver and urging a fearless national platform. Cheers and protests followed, with calls for Bland and Teller noted amid the crowd’s agitation. In Texas, the state Democratic convention began with about 500 delegates as Anthony led the regulars against free silver, pledging to elect Chicago delegates after a platform committee is formed. The Silver wing pushed for a solid silver delegation as the meeting adjourned to resume later.

The Southern Hotel in Bakersfield is now operated by W. F. Coulter on the combined American and European plan with A. A. Cushman as chief clerk and Jack Bennett managing the bar. Coulter, a noted hotelman and former chef for H. H. Stanton, will focus on catering and service with spacious, well kept facilities.
