Al Hulse faced arraignment in Superior Court on a murder charge against William Tibbet. Defense counsel Alford requested time to confer with Hulse and explore a possible change of venue, with proceedings set to resume Monday at 2 pm for plea.
In Tamaqua Pa last night a gas explosion in Lehigh Coal and Navigation No 4 mine burned 14 men badly. Daniel Lewis died today. Two English speaking miners and three foreigners are unconscious with doubtful recoveries. Cause believed linked to a defective safety lamp.
Governor Pardee announced the appointment of Paul W. Bennett of Bakersfield as a Superior Judge of Kern County under a new county bench law. Other appointments included optician examiners F. H. Chinn, H. S. Cahn, W. H. Hare. H. F. Kron to Redwood Park trustee. P. H. Jensen as Trinity County Third District supervisor. and Thomas E. Birner and James McCormick as Agricultural District Twenty-ninth directors.
A Spokane Falls runaway train of sixty plus coal cars without an engine sped four miles through Spokane killing four people and injuring eight. The wreck demolished a house and a laundry, with victims including James Slee and two unidentified men.
