Mexican War Veteran Jesse Allen Dies at Soldiers Home
Jesse Allen, a pioneer and Mexican War veteran who crossed the plains to California in 1846 on the expedition that earned General Fremont the nickname The Pathfinder, died a few days ago at the soldiers' home. He had lived around Havilah and Kernville for over thirty years. The City Board of Education met to appoint teachers for public schools with nine veterans re employed and three new hires. Principal D W Nelson leads the staff assisted by Mrs Clark and others. Plans by architect B G McDougall call for a Beale Memorial Library and Reading room to be completed by October. The 42 by 86 foot building features mission styling, a street entrance portico, and a loggia bust of General Beale. Shelving for 15 000 volumes, with potential 30 000 capacity, and a $5000 appropriation. The interior includes a reading room, trustees room, ladies retiring room and stock room with a delivery desk and fireplace. The band concert tonight features selections from Ramsdell, Fahrbach, and Dalbey under director C F Wiedenbeck.
