Southern Pacific Eyes Walker Pass as Second Mountain Route

A Los Angeles dispatch reports Southern Pacific is developing Walker's Pass as a potential second mountain route from Mojave toward Owens Lake region. A northeasterly Mojave line could reach Randsburg Goler and Red Rock districts, with paths to Bakersfield, to a Carson and Colorado union, or toward Salt Lake City. Two large engineering corps are at work, suggesting high importance. A Salt Lake line would shorten transcontinental travel by about 350 miles, increasing SP independence from rivals.
